He emphasized that New York’s methane emissions are rising and the state can’t meet its climate goals without significantly cutting them. Energy Vision’s 2023 report Putting New York’s Organic Waste to Work, authored by Lerner and EV President Matt Tomich, and an op-ed by EV founder Joanna Underwood both contained EV’s calculations that New York could cut its methane emissions 15% by building 300 ADs, at a very reasonable combined cost of $3.4 billion. This would take the state halfway to the U.S. goal of cutting methane emissions 30% by 2030.
EV research has found that passing a Clean Fuel Standard for NY State, providing incentives for the use of low carbon fuels in the state’s transportation, would be the optimal way to get the methane emission reductions needed. Intensive EV outreach and advocacy by the NY Clean Fuels Coalition will be sustained through the NYS legislative session, which ends in June.
