Extracting the Greatest Value from NYC’s Organics

Joanna Underwood- President, Energy Vision

The Power Of Waste

Pioneers in the waste-to-fuel realm addressed organic waste collection and recycling in NYC and the options for extracting maximum value from this renewable resource at our Power of Waste reception at the Urban Future Lab in Brooklyn, New York on May 20th. The event, hosted by Energy Vision, was a step in the process of educating citizens and generating broad interest and awareness of the emerging organics-to-fuel strategy.

Speakers included Robert B. Catell, Chairman of the Advanced Energy Research & Technology Center; Kathryn Garcia, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Sanitation; Charles Vigliotti, President of Long Island Compost; Don Chahbazpour, Director of Network Strategy at National Grid; and Kevin Matthews, President of Toronto-based CCI BioEnergy. The reception was moderated by Joanna D. Underwood, President and Founder of Energy Vision.

Addressing the potential of the “garbage” we throw away to a packed room of more than 70 business and government leaders, students, and environmental experts alike, the presenters spoke of the opportunities that exist to implement successful anaerobic digestion projects that can save money, ensure cleaner air quality for millions of New Yorkers, and help to address climate change. While the strategy is proven and the technologies are commercial, panelists also highlighted the various logistical challenges associated with getting projects off the ground in our nation’s largest city.

Bringing together the public and private sector leaders to share ideas and get guidance is a key goal of each and every Energy Vision event. So following the event, attendees had the opportunity to engage panelists in an open Q&A dialogue, followed by a networking reception with the pioneering business and government leaders.

The event was sponsored by: Robert B. Catell, Clean Energy Fuels, Armand P. D’Amato, National Grid, and the Urban Future Lab.
